A modern-day renaissance of all things Heart, Sour is the Barracuda of VENUS’ discography. Tunnel vision anger makes this track feel more direct and polished than debut single Deranged, and is precisely the reason why cramming them into a ‘riot-grrrl’ punk pigeonhole feels (and is) completely incorrect.
VENUS are too smart for that, too sophisticated and too refined. Everything about Sour, and frankly speaking the band itself, is done to such a high quality that to undermine it in that way would be a crime. Punk can be brilliant, yes, but there’s a time and a place for it and right now isn’t it. The scene is overcrowded with safety-pinned hopefuls and VENUS won’t be giving them the time of day; they know they’re a good rock band at their core, and they know the road to success is one without cult distractions.
Yet more importantly, Sour shows us that VENUS know their craft. One hit single can be put down to coincidence, a collision of events that created something fantastic. A happy accident, maybe. Two hit singles, and this one definitely will be joining Deranged as a hit, makes it clear that you’ve got a band who know what they’re doing on your hands.
It’s that very thing that makes VENUS dangerous; a band with grit, fighting power and a good head on their shoulders to keep on making the right moves, jumping every bishop and pawn.
VENUS are launching their second single Sour on Friday 7th of June at The Wardrobe, Leeds, supported by Purple Thread, Weekend Recovery and Last Reserves.
